Our Home

Our Home is a series of DeStijl landscape paintings. This series was Michael’s first experiment with using abstract paintings to express real world places and emotions. 

 

His fascination with the idea of using abstraction began during an art school art history lecture about Piet Mondrian.  Michael was skeptical of the theories behind DeStijl as an effective storytelling medium, but his penchant for intellectual honesty made it necessary to run an experiment.   In this case he simply drew a quick version of the classroom on his arm during the lecture.  It worked.  So he spent the rest of the day testing various scene and by that evening he was hooked.

 

This series attempts to condense each location he and his wife have lived together into a unified memory based on a view from that home.
